Compositor de canciones estadounidense. Lane trabajó en Tin Pan Alley, donde llamó la atención de George Gershwin. Desde comienzos de la década de 1930 sus melodías se presentaron en Broadway y posteriormente fueron escuchadas en filmes, como Babes on Broadway (1942). Llegó a su apogeo con Finian's Rainbow (1947; película, El valle del arcoiris,1968), para el cual trabajó con el letrista E.Y. Harburg. Colaboró con Alan Jay Lerner en el filme Bodas reales (1951). Otra dupla con Lerner, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1965; película, Vuelve a mi lado 1970), le dio a Lane su último éxito notable.
